The only two survivors of the 1878 wreck of the Loch Ard were washed into this gorge - now known as Loch Ard Gorge - on the south-east coast of Australia.

The Cape Wickham lighthouse - the tallest in the southern hemisphere - was built in 1861 on the northern tip of King Island to aid navigation through the treacherously narrow entrance to Bass Strait in south-east Australia

As many Australians are descended from those who left Britain by sailing ship, our books have become an excellent resource for those investigating their family history, or with an interest in what life was like for their ancestors on their long voyage.
